Connective tissue

Connective tissue is a tissue that gives the body strength, shape and support. These tissues are divided into 3 groups:

  • ligament
  • cartilage
  • bone

The tissue is normally formed by cells and the intercellular mass by the tissue cells. Their most important functions in the body include: filling the spaces between organs, mechanical support, wrapping around organs, and mediating metabolic products. They are also a storehouse of energy reserves, but especially carriers of the immunologic reactions.

The fibrous part of the tissue structure is made up of two important proteins: collagen and elastin. Collagen fibres are tensile, and elastin fibres ensure flexibility.
