Mitochondria are the metabolic and energy centre of cells that provides cells with the energy they need to perform their functions. They are also called lungs of cells. Mitochondria can repair oxidative DNA damage.

Mitochondrial disorders often manifest as neurological disorders, such as:

  • autism
  • myopathy (neuromuscular disease)
  • diabetes
  • endocrinopathy (thyroid disease)
